Travel networking site, TripSay.com has launched an eco-travel theme. The site’s co-founder Jussi Huotari (pictured right) says he believes eco-travel will continue to be one of the fastest growing segments of travel. The Dove wanted to know more, so headed straight to the source…

THE GREEN DOVE: What is your definition of eco-travel?

JUSSI HUOTARI: This is a very good question. At TripSay we think most definitions of eco-travel focus way too much on technology and arbitrary calculations, such as carbon footprints. We think eco-travel is traveling to see the natural wonders of the world. For example: you travel to the Great Barrier Reef to experience the clean waters, colorful corals, and a myriad of different fishes. The locals make their living out of the reef and it is in their best interest to maintain the reef vivid and lively to keep travelers coming back and telling their friends about the amazing underwater sceneries. An ecotraveler goes to places, where nature is not a resource but a value as such. In doing so, she enables the locals to make their living out of the nature in sustainable way. I wrote about this in my personal blog.

TGD: Do you think travelers are making eco-conscious decisions when making their plans?

JH: Definitely yes! The number of eco-conscious travelers is raising quickly. Many of our partners in travel industry are putting in a big effort in making their offerings eco-friendly because of the growing demand. For example, TUI (one of the world’s largest tourist firms) started a program for eco-certifying all its hotels and hotel partners.

TGD: What are Tripsay’s top five eco destinations and why?

JH: 1. Zion National Park, UT, USA: the color range of the canyon walls and sandstone cliffs is amazing. Good public transportation system in the park.

2. Cinque Terre, Italy: Mediterranean nature provides magnificent natural scenery. Walk through the towns and enjoy the atmosphere.

3. Tikal, Guatemala: The national park displays stunning archaeological remains of the ancient Mayas. Experience the jungle around the city.

4. Plitvice Lakes, Croatia

5. Granada, Spain

TGD: How is the travel industry in general stepping up to meet consumer’s eco-travel demands?

JH: Many agencies and tour operators see eco-consciousness as one of their primary competitive advantages. Eco-conscious travelers will be better and better served because eco-travel is profitable in the long run. Taking care of the nature and natural wonders will keep travelers coming
back again and again.

TGD: Your top eco-friendly essentials to pack before heading on an eco-vacation?

JH: Pack lightly, bring as few batteries as possible to avoid burdening the local system with special waste. The waste management is probably better at home. Bring gear to help you enjoy the nature, such as:
• sunglasses and a hat; • sturdy boots (or fins if going snorkeling);• (natural) insect repellant; • camera; • reusable water bottle.

Leave no trace. Bring back all that you packed for your trip.
