Have you ever been in a relationship that you really, really should have ended – possibly even months or years previous – but you stayed because, well, it all just became a comfortable routine? As humans, we are such creatures of habit. Its almost to our detriment. We hang on to people, salaries, beliefs, behaviours and conditions that arent always best for us, simply because we get scared to jump into the unknown and give something else a go… Or we literally forget how to.

I sometimes refer to the work I do with clients less as €˜psychic readings and more as €˜wake-up call therapy. From time to time, whether they admit it or not, everyone needs to hear some bold truths about themselves and how theyre living their lives. Usually, its not that big a shock: an insistent little voice in your head has been whispering something for ages, but youve ignored it until a complete stranger (like me) says it out loud, forcing you to acknowledge it – and do something about it.

But if youre stuck, miserable and arent sure which direction to turn anymore, what can you do about it? Well, heres a useful tactic you can try: Pattern Interrupt. Its about introducing something radically, outrageously different into your life – something youd normally never do – to shake yourself out of monotony.

Anthony Robbins tells a story about someone who decided to curb their addiction to a particular fattening food. Every time they went to eat it, theyd make themselves stand up and yell out, €˜Im a fat pig! Im a fat pig! Funny and a bit extreme, but you can imagine what a difference that would have made in a very short time! A less extreme example of changing your behaviour comes from Dr Phil, who says he always used to snack when he got home. Hed walk in the front door, go straight to the kitchen, and grab something to munch on. His pattern interrupt? He started coming home through the back door.

The bottom line is, moving away from stagnancy in your life immediately ushers in new change, fresh ideas, creativity, inspiration and opportunity. Thats simply how the universe works. So if youd like to change yourself and add some meaningful new directions in your life (and research shows that people who have meaning in their lives feel less depressed), then spring is your season!
